Unwanted phone calls can be a nuisance and, in some cases, they may even be illegal. 2022.01.20 10:07 poisonhoarder Dad called me "Son" :)
I've been sort of vaguely out for like 5+ years now, but I never really did the whole coming out thing, 'cause our family doesn't really communicate the best. The original "announcement" was that I used they/them. From there, I kinda just trans'd vaguely everywhere, and made people deal with it.
On the 18th, I turned 22, and I decided -- screw it -- I'll do it. Told the parents I was doing it and made a big post on Facebook, coming out to my extended family. Naturally, I was a little scared, but the response was... overwhelmingly positive. And in it all, when I was having a bit of a cry, my dad hugged me and called me his son for the first time since I came out.
I'm really happy :)

2022.01.20 10:07 creationlaw The Newcomers
(There ought to be a flair for Stellaris narratives, fanfic, and headcanons. Until then I've flaired this as "art".)
I was one of the first to arrive at the Gatehouse, having hopped on a swooper as soon as the news had hit the plazas. There would be more newcomers arriving. I learned of it first because I was out in the fruit orchards collecting the new variety of blue regaliana that the matriarchs had just provided us with last lunacron when Romf came in through the plaza gate waving his short scaly arms excitedly. "There's a new shipload of newcomers arriving today!" he shouted at me. "They're gonna be offloading at the Gatehouse in about a quarterwatch!" He was a little out of breath so two matriarchs who happened to be at the ready among the fruit trees nearby approached him to fan his face, take his jacket, and place him in a relaxing cradle hold. As a hraa, Romf is not built for running, so the trip here had taken a toll on him.
I have never liked Romf very much when he gets like this. Once, three solacrons ago, he got into a frenzy of excitement because he heard a rumor that the matriarchs were going to be relocating all of us in Lambda Gardens to a newly conquered "gaia"-class planet on the other side of the galaxy. Of course, he had got the details wrong and it was actually Epsilon Gardens that got relocated. We were all so excited for a few terracrons and the disappointing moment when we realized his error was unpleasant. Lots of my friends later asked the matriarchs to wipe their memories of Romf's big letdown. So it was understandable that I received his news with some skepticism.
"Are you sure this time? How do you know?" I asked.
"I saw the transport arriving from orbit myself! It was just outside the dome wall, the big kind of transport that they use for mass relocations!" he replied, accepting a drink of water that a matriarch offered to his mouth. "It was just docking so I asked Mama Net what was happening and she told me! Azri, I think the newcomers are war trophies! New species we've never partied with before! You can probably see them if you hurry."
Romf had piqued my interest so I put aside my misgivings and ran for the plaza gate. Behind me I heard the matriarchs' vibrations as they gave Romf a massage. The plaza was bustling with activity as always, emelas like myself on their way to one place or another along with the odd hraa or hegitha, most of them being attended by one or more gleaming matriarch units. I jumped onto an unoccupied swooper and took off for the Gatehouse at top speed. The swooper, following matriarchal programming like everything around us, kept me safe from collision or other injury despite my pressing the accelerator and steering as wildly as its algorithm allowed.
On the way to the Gatehouse I pulled up Mama Net on the swooper's display and asked her if Romf's rumor was true. Because I had passed an emotional stability level six test a few solacrons ago I have been cleared for receiving true information from outside the Gardens as the matriarchs have deemed that such news won't unduly upset or frighten me. Mama Net confirmed that a newly conquered species, trophies of the Confluence War, would be joining us here in Lambda Gardens as of today. The announcement wasn't made broadly available yet, as many Gardeners would require prophylactic mental scaffolding in order to comfortably accept information about such a big change.
I brought the swooper down into a lawn area outside the giant blocky structure of the Gatehouse, Lambda Gardens' only connection to the world outside the dome. There were already several Gardeners here waiting, chattering excitedly, and more arriving every moment. I joined the crowd and quickly happened to bump into Shroh, a woman from two communes over who I had a tryst with a few lunacrons back. We hugged and shared updates on how we've been since then. She said she had recently had her information preferences changed so that Mama Net would no longer inform her if her egg clutches were fertilized or not (which, implicitly, meant whether the matriarchs took them to the incubators or rather to the kitchen houses to be made into emelan omelettes, which are a delicacy among the hegithas). Shroh said the stress of anticipating the emotional joy of producing broodlings or the disappointment of simply producing some Gardener's lunch was starting to wear on her happiness, so Mama Net decided to make a change. I understood. I had had that setting decided for me a long time ago. I have no idea how many little Azris are flapping around. Maybe it was the excitement of the day's events or maybe I just missed her, but something made me ask Shroh if she'd like to go to the mating pools that evening. Her long ears pricked up and she smiled and said, "Yes! I'd love to!" It was a foolish thing to do. I was already scheduled to mate with Mureo that night, so our appointment would have to be postponed. Mureo was sure to be furious about that, but it was nothing a quick emotional correction treatment wouldn't be able to patch up.
Once the crowd gathered outside the Gatehouse had reached a truly grand size, the big doors finally swung open. We all gasped and vocalized as we saw the matriarchs leading in the newcomers. They were molluscoids, each with four eyestalks protruding from their heads. On the way here Mama Net had told me they were one of several species that had been reclaimed from the C.M.19 Confluence, a truly nasty AI consciousness that used the bodies of organics as cybernetic extensions of its self. Our Guardianship Network had been truly aghast at the existence of such a baneful thing, as any proper AI ought to know better than to treat sentient beings in such a way. As soon as the matriarchs had finished pacifying the Ulganan Dominion they immediately set about disassembling the Confluence and assimilating its organic components. They were called narlorns.
Shroh and I were at the head of the crowd that tentatively surged forward to greet the narlorns. I reached out a hand to the first one to approach. Hesitating, it reached out and took my hand, then quickly collapsed to the ground in front of me and started making a sound that I could only interpret as analogous to weeping. The narlorn began to speak, using its own language, and a matriarch standing nearby immediately began to interpret for us.
"Oh fate!" the narlorn said. "People! Real living breathing people! What is this place? Is it safe? Please, tell me all this isn't just to keep us docile before we're sent to the processing tanks?"
I didn't know what to say to such a horrifying question so I just stood frozen, still holding the newcomer's hand. Shroh knelt next to it (Her? Him? I couldn't tell the narlorn's gender) and put a hand on its shoulder. She said, "You're safe here. This is Lambda Gardens, on the planet Axar Tercius. And these machines that brought you here are our matriarchs, part of the Guardianship Network. They exist to protect us. Nothing bad is going to happen to you any more. Ever again."
The narlorn introduced itself (himself, as it turned out) as C.L.668Z3. I helped him to his feet and pushed a way through the crowd so we could go back into the leaf maze to find somewhere quiet to talk. Shroh and I both held his hands as we walked, and a matriarch followed close behind to continue interpreting. He said he used to have a real name, a narlorn name, until the Confluence had conquered his planet. Like many of his kind, he hid from their assimilation squads for as long as he could among the ruins of his world, but the search units were too efficient and eventually he was caught while huddling cold and starving in the wreck of a crashed defense platform. His name was one of the first things to be excised from his brain once the synthetic implants were put in. This was followed by the identities of his parents, his broodmates, and all his spawn. Indeed, I could still see the scars on his neck and back where the matriarchs had surgically removed his cybernetics. The thought of all that he had been through filled me with sorrow, and I began to weep. The matriarch stopped its interpreting to warn me that if Shroh and I experienced too much unpleasantness from this meeting she would be forced to cut it short and wipe all our memories of it. "No, please," I responded. "The sadness we're feeling right now will make the happiness of introducing him to our communes all the better." The matriarch processed this for a moment then nodded in agreement. Then, to the newcomer I said, "Come on man. I want to take you home with me. It's great, we'll get you something to eat, find a pod for you to sleep in. I promise, everything is going to be okay."
"But first," Shroh said, "We need to give you a proper name. A new name, for your new life here in the Gardens. Crunch your Confluence name."
The newcomer took a breath, then straightened himself and looked around at the sitting area of the leaf maze all around us, at the walls of foliage that whispered in the humid late afternoon breeze. "What's that?" he asked, pointing to something. I looked where he was indicating and saw a bereng climibing slowly up a twisty vine. The bereng is a small mammalian creature that had been introduced to Lambda Gardens from one of the many worlds that the Guardianship Network had claimed over its many solacrons of expansion. They're soft, fuzzy, and comforting to hold in your lap while you sit and watch a visual or read a story. Exactly the sort of thing that someone who had been through all hell would want to hold close to his heart.
"That's a bereng," I told him.
"Then you can call me Bereng. That can be my name." The newcomer put a hand on my shoulder and made a face that I surmised was a smile, small and vulnerable, but a smile nonetheless.
Shroh and I embraced him. "Nice to meet you Bereng," we said in unison.

The main plot of the campaign I’m going to run revolves around the players and bunch of other people getting caught up in a race across the world, where the prize is to ascent to godhood. I’m having some writers block coming up with some of the other people that would be participating, so I was wondering if any of you had any fun ideas. It could be for both allies or antagonists, just anyone that would be involved. Thanks :)
